Discussion:
[AMRadio] D 104 mic element

Hi all,
I am in need of a replacement mic element for a D104. I picked a mic up
at a swap meet this past weekend and it seems to have a bad mic element.
I am looking for anyone who might have a spare laying around that they
would be willing to part with. My next step might be to try and replace
it with one of those Radio shack elements that I have read about, but
want that as a last resort. Anyone have an opinion on those elements?

Thanks-Bob-W0YBS

NO NO on the Rat Shack ones. I've found the (near) best replacements
when compared to the Astatic original is one from Mouser Electronics.
Almost the same size and in the crystal variety if memory serves me
correctly. Response charts bout the same also. Fellas help me out with
the Mouser info as I can't find mine presently for Bob. Bob, it's kinda
like, if your date says she's sick, shoot, ask her sister to go barn
dancing that Saturday night as she'll be close enough. Better that
giving up and having to end up watch the cows munch grass during the
afternoon and growing overnight. Hey, even in the best of ham radio
families the other members will never know. In addendum, Bob, in all my
years in ham radio I've never run across a ham who could tell how old my
D-104 crystal microphone element was in it's life cycle nor how many
actual crystals were housed in it case indicating mv output. Shoot most
of us in our well ham radio seasoned time line nearing end of the paper
roll can't even discern our birth given names when supper calls go out
indicating it's on the table getting cold. That's why supper bells on
the back or front porch (your bride's choice) that rang out CQ were
invented in the first place. <grin>

Mouser has not stocked these for a long time now, if you are talking
about the Kobitone 25LM022 was the part number.

It looks like RB Micro out of Greeley Colorado has the elements that
Mouser used to carry. They even reference that in their website.$10.00.
You cant beat that.

Thanks to all for their suggestions and help.

The 25LM022 is the smaller 35MM element and they work fine, but the
best one was the 25LM024 it is 50mm in size and sounds better, these are
the best ones to have.

That element worked well in many of the older crystal mikes. I used it to
repair of few of them, but alas, Kobitone has discontinued it and it is
nowhere to be found at any of the usual places like Mouser, Newark, Allied,
or anyplace that used to catalog it.

...and I have used the last of my stash. Anyone find a suitable replacement
other than the junk blue plastic ones peddled on eBay it would be good to
know.

FWIW Heil Sound makes a dynamic element for D-104's. Bob Heil is a ham

That element worked well in many of the older crystal mikes. I used it to repair of few of them, but alas, Kobitone has discontinued it and it is nowhere to be found at any of the usual places like Mouser, Newark, Allied, or anyplace that used to catalog it.
...and I have used the last of my stash. Anyone find a suitable replacement other than the junk blue plastic ones peddled on eBay it would be good to know.

Mouser has not stocked these for a long time now, if you are talking about the Kobitone 25LM022 was the part number.

NO NO on the Rat Shack ones. I've found the (near) best replacements when compared to the Astatic original is one from Mouser Electronics. Almost the same size and in the crystal variety if memory serves me correctly. Response charts bout the same also. Fellas help me out with the Mouser info as I can't find mine presently for Bob. Bob, it's kinda like, if your date says she's sick, shoot, ask her sister to go barn dancing that Saturday night as she'll be close enough. Better that giving up and having to end up watch the cows munch grass during the afternoon and growing overnight. Hey, even in the best of ham radio families the other members will never know. In addendum, Bob, in all my years in ham radio I've never run across a ham who could tell how old my D-104 crystal microphone element was in it's life cycle nor how many actual crystals were housed in it case indicating mv output. Shoot most of us in our well ham radio seasoned time line nearing end of the paper roll can't even discern our birth given names when supper calls go out indicating it's on the table getting cold. That's why supper bells on the back or front porch (your bride's choice) that rang out CQ were invented in the first place. <grin>

Hi all,
I am in need of a replacement mic element for a D104. I picked a mic up at a swap meet this past weekend and it seems to have a bad mic element. I am looking for anyone who might have a spare laying around that they would be willing to part with. My next step might be to try and replace it with one of those Radio shack elements that I have read about, but want that as a last resort. Anyone have an opinion on those elements?
Thanks-Bob-W0YBS

Just thought I'd pass along what I think is a terrific deal on a little
mic preamp:

http://www.amazon.com/ART-Tube-Studio-Mic-Preamp/dp/B0002E50MC/

I haven't done any testing with RF present yet but the audio quality is
excellent as is the range of connectors and gain options (up to
60dB). It sounds nice and clean with a low-z mic, and if you need a
bit of audio gain, you sure can't build a preamp for this kind of $.
